EMDR Aftercare

EMDR therapy can be a powerful tool for healing trauma, but the work doesn’t end when your session does. Proper aftercare is essential to help your mind and body integrate what you’ve processed.

1. Give Yourself Time to Rest
EMDR can be intense. Many clients feel emotionally drained, physically tired, or mentally stimulated after a session. Allow yourself some quiet time - rest, take a short nap, or do something relaxing. Try to avoid major decisions, conflicts, or emotionally taxing situations in the hours following EMDR.

2. Stay Hydrated and Nourished
Processing can affect your energy levels. Be sure to stay hydrated and eat to support your body’s recovery.

3. Be Aware
It’s normal for thoughts or emotions from the session to resurface. If this happens, be sure to observe, take notes of your thoughts, feelings, or any insights, and remind yourself this is to be expected as your brain adjusts.

4. Seek Support if Needed
Some emotions may feel overwhelming after a session. Don’t hesitate to reach out to your therapist or a trusted person for additional support.

Remember, integration is part of the healing process. Each session can bring up new insights, and taking care of yourself afterward ensures the benefits of EMDR last and deepen over time.
